A Collection of Thoughts

"In this age of political correctness, it's really tough to find something we can all hold sacred anymore. Directives to use words and phrases like "significant other" and other bland, clinical language makes it tougher and tougher to put pen to paper and make something truly moving. E-mail has brought on the death of the days when letters were written with a degree of formality, now the dreaded e-mote :) alleviates the need for a more inspired message. If chivalry wasn't dead when they first said it was, it definitely is now."

A Chemical Reaction

It's very difficult to write about a 'significant other'.

'Mutual feelings of attraction' doesn't have the same ring as 'love'
But what can I do? Love is passed away.
Lol has replaced true laughter, something that we humans NEED to hear,
And smilies =) have supplanted the emotions we used to share.

This is a world of speed.

We write emails in the blink of an eye.
We can talk to 5 people at once,
And run an equal number of programs,
And look at an equal number of webpages.

What happened to us?

What happened to one on ones?
What happened to taking your time?
What happened to love?
What happened to humanity?

It's no longer a world we want to live in.

See, suicide rates have jumped.
Divorce is over 50%!
It seems like forever since one man gave his life,
So we would know the meaning of love.

But no, I'm getting ahead of myself here.

We used to have quotes from days long gone,
But now, the only quotes worth saying are bland ones.
We used to say,
“Love is like wildflowers; It's often found in the most unlikely places.”

"Love is only a chemical reaction." It's nothing personal, I promise.

What happened to his dream? For a better world?
What happened to loving your neighbor?
Instead, India and Pakistan,
Palestine and Israel, North and South Korea.

Where did world peace go? Was that just a dream?

This beautiful world. Look outside.
The trees, the birds in the sky,
The wind whistling past your windows.
Is not everything a miracle?

When was the last time you saw the world?

Look out over the city. Metal forests.
Air of carbon, methane, death and disease.
Sheer faces of bleakness, no warmth in them,
And people who live alone, a world apart.

This is a world of death.

Death, not of the body,
But Death of the Soul,
What makes us human, what makes us alive.
We have no souls- but merely empty machines.

Sadness and coldness, and there was darkness on the face of the deep.

Perverseness.
Forgiveness has become hatred, and we hate for a sport.
We have self-harm, and depression, and irony all around.
Where did we go? What path did we take?

I could cry, but I don't think I remember how to.

Pray for us now, and at the hour of our birth. Those who talk about literature and emotions as 'great works of mankind' are merely admiring it as a gravestone of the soul. To attempt to see love and hope and all those virtues that make us who we are, and turning a blind eye to hatred and despair and all those vices that make us who we are... it cannot be. You cannot know light without knowing darkness.

You offer a very poignant reminder that we really must hold onto that which is true and beautiful, even in the face of such a powerful rip tide pulling us towards the pragmatic. The damnably efficient. Thank you.
